Description

The history of Djenne is linked with that of the well-known Timbuktu. Between the 15th and 17th centuries much of the trans-Saharan trade in goods like gold, salt and slaves that came in and out of Timbuktu passed through Djenne. Both places became centers for Islamic study.

Djenne is well known for its adobe architecture, especially the Great Mosque built in 1907, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
