Description

Cast brass Sindoor (or sindooram, a traditional vermillion red or orange-red collored cosmetic powder from India, usually worn by married women along the parting line of their hair) and kumkum (a powder used for social and religioius markings, usually made from dried turmeric which is powdered with a bit of slaked lime, which turns the rich yellow powder into a red color and used to decorate womens forehead in place of a 'bindi' spot) storage container. This two tiered storage container is intricately hand cast with circling scroll key like design and parrots and peacocks.

This item is from the Bastar district in the state of Chhattisgrah, central India. It dates from the early 20th century and measures 10" tall x 4.25" in diameter.
