Excavated verdigre bronze Dong Son ceremonial drum (oftentimes referred to as rain drums), 'Moung' ethnic minority culture, with traditional eight ray solar star (sun), four toads arrayed on the tympanum. From recent excavations in Thanh Hoa province. Dong Son drums are the largest and most elaborately decorated of all the Dong Son bronze wares which include household wares, tools, weaponry, ornaments and jewelry, figurines and statues, and musical instruments. Dong Son drums are a source of immense pride to the Vietnamese people. It is believed that the drums were used in social / ceremonial activities as well as military conflicts (as a means of communication. This Type II drum was found in the region inhabited by the 'Muong' ethnic minority people, hence referred to as "Moung drums". Recovered in Vietnam, dates from the 11th century and measures 27.25" diameter x 18" high. In fine condition.
