Vietnamese Wood Figure of St. Francis Xavier
[vie040100110]
This is a polychrome figure of Saint Francis Xavier made in Vietnam in the early 19th century during the French Colonial period. Francis Xavier was a Jesuit missionary who introducted Christianity to China. He has the hair of a monk but wears the fine robe of someone less stoic. This is a terrifically carved and painted piece with fine details e.g. the sole of his shoes shows in the rear where he is kneeling. This figure stands 6" high, 2.5" wide and 3" deep
