Vietnamese Ly Dynasty Jar
Vietnamese Ly Dynasty Jar [ngu010425]  shipping weight: 5 LB
This beautiful piece is a fine example of a Vietnamese covered jar from the Ly dynasty (1009-1225AD). Our barrel shaped jar is presented here without the lid, but jars like these would originally be found lidded, holding pickled food, oil, or vinegar in the kitchens of wealthier Vietnamese homes during this period. The advanced level of workmanship and the high quality of the glaze recall Song pieces in their refined simplicity. The beautiful ivory color and fine crackle of this glaze marks it as unmistakably Vietnamese. During the 1920’s, French archeologist Clement Huet excavated some of these prized jars near the Thanh Hoa province, and they are still often known as “Thanh Hoa” jars.

Northern Vietnamese clay was of very good quality: smooth, fine and white making it the perfect base for the glassy cream-colored, monochrome wood-ash glaze. This refined quality, wedded with the Vietnamese tendency for a relaxed, natural charm of form makes this piece quite desirable. During the time of production, these jars were in high demand in Japan, where they were used in the Japanese tea ceremony. They are so prized that the finest examples can still be found in private Japanese heirloom collections .

There are several different variations of these Vietnamese jars, some are more plain and others more ornate. This particular jar has the lotus petal motif around the rim of the mouth, an ornamentation which makes it somewhat unique. Buddhist sangas and the imperial court being probably the two most prolific patrons of local Vietnamese kilns, both excercised a great deal of influence on Vietnamese ceramics. This piece displays the influence of buddhist tastes. The lotus signifies purity and is a favorite iconography in religious art, but its decorative use bled into functional art as well, as is exemplified in this jar.
