Philippine Carved Seated Winged Cherub
[cha020504794]
|
This is a polychrome figure of an angel carved from a wood called Santol wood. The figure is holding what may be a baby lamb. It has repousse brass wings "strung" onto it's shoulders by metal wires. This piece may date back to the early 1900's or possibly earlier. It displays the influence of Spanish art and religion on the Philippines, which had a rich, but much different tradition of figurative sculpture. None of the native visual vocabulary are evident in these carved "santos" pieces, but native talent is very evident in the Philippino ability to mimick Spanish styles of iconography. The santos figures from the Philippines can easily be taken for wooden saint figures from Spain. This cherub is not in perfect condition but it still displays a great deal of charm. It's right leg has been broken off, and the left feet was damaged when the piece was originally made. This is very interesting because we can see in this figure the mode of repair originally employed by the artisans. The toe of the feet is attached as a seperate piece with a wooden pin and "swivels" when one twists it. This was how these damaged pieces were made whole.
