Heavily cast antique bronze-finished brass "Dong Song", rain ceremony drum, with three mid section cartouches featuring swimming fish, turtle and palm tree motifs respectively. Stylized sun burst design on top and circling carabao (i.e. water buffalo, a local beast of burden) around base.
Used since ancient times in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in temples and villages during festivities and ceremonies to attract attention from the heavens to encourage a good rainy season and to insure healthy crops. A custom reproduction made for us in Thailand from an original in the Shanghai Museum, China, dating back to 500 B.C. 24" diameter by 18" tall.
